The New Zealand Herald and its publisher NZME has outdone its peers, claiming eight major awards, including best daily newspaper, at the Australasian and Pacific news media awards.

These awards replace the Panpa Newspaper Awards, combining them with Australia’s Advertising & Marketing Awards. Stuff scored two wins in the competition. Fred Wesley, editor in chief at the Fiji Times editor-in-chief took home the news media executive of the year prize, the only award that went to a Pacific Island media group. Australian giant News Corp Media grabbed the most awards with 13 wins.

Commenting on the NZME success, Shayne Currie, managing editor NZME, says, “This accolade recognises a huge year for our newsrooms across New Zealand, including the unveiling of our new website and record audiences for the New Zealand Herald in all its forms.”

New Zealand, Australian, and Asia Pacific new media publishers submitted more than 500 entries for this year’s awards, which recognise excellence in cross platform news publishing. The categories cover advertising, marketing, technical, product innovation, executive excellence, photography and the overall news brand.
