Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific Christchurch grabbed the country’s top printing prize on Friday night, winning the Pride In Print supreme award with its Farrah’s Fajita Spice Mix packet.

The winning entry, which also took out the packaging category award, underwent numerous processes. The company reverse printed the three-ply laminate in six colours using hd pixal-plus technology on flat top plates. With the sheet then laminated onto a metallised substrate, when printed, the reversed out section shone through the reversal printing to give the effect of a metal spoon which highlights the product shot.

It then went through laminating to a sealant layer, edited offline on a slitting machine, then surface printed with a matt overgloss registered plate to further enhance the unusual appearance of the packaged product through light and dark.

Accepting the supreme award, Mark Thian, general manager at Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific Christchurch, paid tribute to everyone involved in the awards and also to all who contributed to the production of the winning entry. He said, “To win this trophy on the anniversary of 25 years is just fantastic and also to have everyone coming along on this night. Thank you very much for the way you have received our win

“Talking a little bit about what we have heard tonight, in relation to how Pride In Print has encouraged working for excellence over 25 years; we have in our factory, a great bunch of people who work on the factory floor and who support us. Not just the printing but also in prepress such as our plate manufacturers. Without those people, this doesn’t happen.”

Talking about the complexity of the job, Thian said, “It means that just about every person in every department in our plant – about 200 people – touches the job at least once, which is not normal in flexographic printing, Usually, and you all probably know this, you print it, you slit it and then out the door. The fact that everybody touches it, makes the difference.”

For just the second time, judges awarded a runner-up to the supreme award. This time, it went to Southan Print for a photographic portrait of a girl with her cello which the company screen printed onto canvas to resemble a fine art print. It also won Specialty Products Category and the Screen Printing Process Category.
