Northland’s printing.com Kaitaia has purchased a second Astrojet M1 Memjet inkjet printer, through AMS, Allied Machinery Services, citing the machine’s ability to print full colour envelopes in variable data with a same day service to clients

Peter Smith, production manager at printing.com Kaitaia, says the company bought the second to ensure it had no breaks in production. He says, “Because we advertise on-demand print we have to ensure we are just that.

“We are very happy with the machine which we mostly use for envelopes and some docket books. You can turn around up to 1000 full colour envelopes with variable data in about half an hour, and in terms of cost, customers are getting full colour from this machine for the same cost for a single colour if they were printed offset.

“The inkjet technology produces good quality print, which is value for money, given that envelopes are disposable the minute they are received and opened. And the real bonus is the mail merging function of the printer.”

The Astrojet prints up to 1600dpi and up to 9000 envelopes (or 3600 letter sized pages) an hour. It handles sizes from 76mm x 107mm to 241mm x 431mm. Five 250ml reservoirs supply the ink.

Several years ago, AMS also supplied the company a Glunz & Jensen PW2000 plate writer, a metal CTP system which produces press-ready aluminium plates for small newspaper applications or commercial printers with daylight operation and without the use of chemical processing. It produces digital CTP plates by applying a liquid dot image on to non-photosensitive aluminium printing plates. A semiautomated plate registration system enables multiple plate sizes and gauges can be used in parallel, with no changes.
